Where Is Engage In Palestine?

Engage in Hebron is located in the bustling city of Hebron, which is in the south of the West Bank and is the largest city in the West Bank. Hebron is also one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, rich in culture and full of historic and religious significance. Today, Hebron is on the frontline of the Israeli occupation, as it is the only city in the West Bank with Israeli settlers having taken over parts of the city itself and with several Israeli settlements in the area.

Despite this, Hebron is safe for international visitors and the Palestinians of Hebron are very friendly and welcoming. Hebron is well-known for its history of traditional handicrafts, which include ceramics, glassblowing, shoe-making, embroidery, and other leather products.

The expertise of these crafts has often been passed down from one generation to the next, although this industry has faced many challenges due to globalization, economic issues, and restrictions due to the Israeli occupation. Hebron is also known for its delicious Palestinian food, with qidreh (also propounded as idreh), rice, and chicken with a special blend of spices, being one of the most famous dishes.

Hear From Some Of Our Previous Interns

Below we have some excerpts from testimonials provided by our former interns across a range of our short-term internships in Palestine.

Our Human Rights Internship Program

“In just two weeks, I have had visits to numerous organizations, including women’s organizations, hospitals, schools, law firms, and other community projects. This has provided me with an in-depth insight into the human rights situation in Palestine and the challenges that individuals face. “ – Natasha, from the UK

Our Journalism And Media Program

“There were many journalists who came in and spoke to us, and we also visited radio stations. I even made some connections with journalists who invited me to work alongside them.” – Fionn, from Ireland

“There is no better place to improve my skills in the Arabic language than around natives. Regarding my law internship – as many European lawyers and law students would agree with me, we have very little knowledge of law systems outside our countries or Europe. I consider this as a unique possibility to understand better the sources of Palestinian law, its application, division, and have a possibility to talk with the local lawyers.” – Tereza, from the Czech Republic.

Our Teach English Internship

“During my time volunteering I worked with the most wonderful students who truly wanted to learn English and learn more about the multitude of volunteers working them.” – Nizar, a Palestinian American

Our Medicine And Healthcare Program

“After learning a bit about the healthcare situation in Palestine, I was then able to provide some lessons to students at the local Hebron University. For me, this was the best part of the whole program. The students came from a wide range of disciplines including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, midwifery, lab science, and biology. In these sessions, I was able to share with them some of my own clinical experiences and provide some training on communication skills, medical ethics, and academic writing.

The students were very engaging and asked lots of good questions, I was impressed with their knowledge and enthusiasm… My favorite moment was seeing the students debate real ethical cases and present their arguments for and against” – Joshua, a doctor from the UK.

Our Palestinian Refugees Program

“The center provided tangible ways to understand what life is like here. This is exactly what I was hoping to get out of the trip, as I know it will help better inform me for my future efforts in my career. It is so important as a future career woman to make these connections, so I can be the best I can be for the people I will encounter at work. I have learned to be a better advocate and speak for what is right.” – Megan, from the US

Our Community Development Program

“Being [at Engage in Palestine] has meant a change in my professional career and my personal life. The center cares about the volunteers and prepares very complete activities. In addition, you learn a lot about human rights, and the experience in the COMMUNITY PROGRAM and teaching in the fields has been incredible. I feel that I have grown a lot these weeks here. I have been able to learn a lot about the right to the press and the lack of opportunities for children in the fields. The center works very hard to give the best care to the refugees and it is a pleasure to be able to collaborate with them.” – Miriam, from Spain Community Development
