Where Is Engage In Palestine?

Our center is located in the heart of Hebron, on Ein Sarah Street, an area under the supervision of the Palestinian Authority. Being one of the best known streets in the region, Engage in Palestine’s convenient base makes it popular for international and Palestinian visitors alike.

Additionally, its central location makes it well connected to Hebron’s municipal and educational organizations and offerings such as restaurants, supermarkets, banks, gyms, shops, NGOs, cafes, mosques and much more.

Furthermore, Engage in Palestine is also licensed as a cultural and educational center by the Palestinian Ministry of Education, which also supervises our center’s quality of education and an overwhelming part of that is because of the culture that naturally surrounds Hebron.

Palestinians In Hebron Are Very Hospitable

During your time here, you will be surrounded by people who want to help make your trip to Palestine as enjoyable as possible. You might hear them saying “hello”, “welcome to Palestine!” or “how are you?” as you amble down the streets and although it might be unusual at first, all these greetings are as a sign of hospitality and eagerness, as we are always glad to have you here.

Palestinians in Hebron want to make sure you feel totally comfortable and welcome on their sacred land and among their people, and consequently always happy to help with anything you may need. What Are The Advantages Of Living With A Palestinian Host Family?

The prospect of living with a group of people that you do not know, along with a language barrier, can be daunting. However, we believe that these discomforts are learning experiences that bring about great growth and advantages. We’ve found that discomfort is usually eased very quickly and living with a Palestinian family is a positive experience for our guests. There are many benefits including:

  • A unique insight into the daily life of a family, such as sharing delicious home-cooked traditional meals and attending family events.
  • Experiencing Palestinian culture and hospitality: A host family offers a brilliant resource for learning the culture first hand and experiencing the beauty of Palestinian hospitality. There will be plenty of opportunities to attend traditional wedding ceremonies and other events with a host family, especially on Fridays, when families usually welcome large gatherings and cook traditional food.

Learning Arabic With The Help Of Your Host Family

Living with a host family also provides the most efficient way of learning the language. While most families do speak some English, you can expect the majority of conversation to be held in the Palestinian dialect, with Google translate coming in handy if you don’t yet speak Arabic!

However, families with small children are particularly helpful in this respect, since the vocabulary of young children is simpler and their pronunciation is often corrected by their parents. Parents will also often be delighted for you to help out with children’s English homework, providing a chance for practicing simple translations.

Host Families For Female And Male Participants

Due to the conservative nature of Hebron, it can be challenging to place male participants with a host family, so this option is only guaranteed for our female participants. However, whether you are a man or woman, you may be invited for a meal or to spend time with a family during your stay in Palestine. This will give you a great insight into Palestine hospitality and chances to practice your Arabic while also being a lot of fun!

Safety In Hebron

Is Palestine really safe? This is a question that many visitors of Palestine and Israel, (including international volunteers, interns, Arabic students and their families) ask when someone is considering coming to Palestine and Engage in Palestine’s center in Hebron.

We understand that people including students, visitors, volunteers and tourists are concerned about the safety and the security situation in the West Bank as the international news and media paint a picture of the situation in Palestine as being very tense and sometimes dangerous, however…

Hebron Is Safer Than Some Western Cities

It is easy to trust the people of Hebron and visitors can generally walk alone on the streets without concern for theft or potential problems. “I feel incredibly safe in Palestine,” says Lauren Souz, an Engage in Palestine volunteer from the United States.

“I actually feel much safer than in America…I’m never harassed and have never had any problems. I have been bothered by the attention at times, but have never felt unsafe.”

Cara Van Dusen, a volunteer from America, has volunteered at Engage in Palestine twice, with the most recent being Autumn 2015. Israeli-Palestinian tensions were especially high at that time but Cara expressed that she still felt safe in Hebron:

“There would sometimes be clashes between Israeli settlers, Palestinians and soldiers, but these were easy to avoid and locals were a great help with this. Now that I’m in Palestine again things feel much calmer and clashes are rare. Palestine has always been so much more than the fighting we see in the news and there are so many beautiful and deeply kind people that I’ve been honored to meet. I feel safe and loved and would encourage anyone thinking of volunteering to come and experience this for themselves.”

More recently, Mami from Japan, one of our volunteers in 2023 said, “I felt very safe in the city as a foreigner. There was not one moment when I felt in danger. In my opinion, this is the most welcoming place I have ever been as a foreigner, with people saying hi, welcome to you everyday on the street with smiles.”

Safety: What Does Our Coordinator Say?

“Most of Hebron and Palestine is very safe,” writes Engage in Palestine/Excellence Center Coordinator Marwa Shantir. “There are sometimes problems in the Old City,” she explains, “but even then it is not usually dangerous for foreigners.”

During times of increased tension, you may need to be aware of the situation and avoid certain areas or routes due to clashes or road closures. In such instances, you can rely on locals and public transportation operators being familiar with these problems and adapting accordingly. The safety of our guests and volunteers is one of our top priorities and we want to ensure everyone who stays with Engage in Palestine has a positive experience.

The Political Situation And Life Under Occupation

International visitors are able to travel freely through the parts of Hebron which Palestinians are not permitted to access and this is something which often sticks in the minds of our guests and inspires them to raise awareness of the situation.

A Brief History Of Hebron, Palestine

In its early history, Hebron was under Byzantine rule, after which it fell prey to the crusaders. It is now divided into H1 (Palestinian Authority) and H2 (Israeli Authority)
