Alcohol in the West Bank, Palestine? As you might already know, people in the Middle East for the most part do not drink alcohol, and some countries even outlaw the sale of it. In some Middle Eastern countries, it is possible to buy and drink alcohol in certain places such as hotels and restaurants, but in other countries it is not permissible anywhere. So what is the situation in the West Bank, Palestine, and how does it compare?

The West Bank, Palestine is predominantly a Muslim country, and within Islam alcohol is forbidden according to the teachings of the Qu’ran. Regardless of this fact, Palestinian law allows for its production and sale, however some cities have outlawed it on the local level. For example, in Hebron–which is the most conservative city in Palestine–the sale and consumption of alcohol is not permitted at all.

Only 30 minutes away, however, the city of Bethlehem is a totally different story. Though Christians today make up just under 12 percent of the population out of approximately 30,000 people, historically Bethlehem had a Christian majority of 80 percent which has therefore influenced the culture and laws. Thus, you can find alcohol including beer, wine, and spirits in most shops, restaurants, and cafés.

However, alcohol in Palestine is not just limited to Bethlehem. You can also find alcohol in the shops and restaurants of Ramallah, and Birzeit–which is located near Ramallah–has a long-standing tradition of excellent wine and beer production.

Am I allowed to drink in public in Ramallah or Bethlehem?

The simple answer is no. It is not permitted to drink alcohol in public but you can drink alcohol at official establishments such as restaurants and cafés, or privately within your home. Drinking alcohol in public, such as in a park during a picnic, is not permissible.

What is the legal drinking age?

While most countries have what is called a Minimum Legal Drinking Age (MLDA), in the West Bank, Palestine, the law does not define a specific age. However, custom typically dictates those 18 and older may buy alcohol

What about in Israel?

Similar to the situation in the West Bank, Palestine, the sale and consumption of alcohol in Israel is generally permitted but not necessarily in all areas. In Arab-majority communities within Israel, alcohol is forbidden; this includes the sale, consumption, and even possession of alcohol. Additionally, open containers are strictly prohibited by law in Beersheba and Jerusalem.

Does Israel have a legal drinking age?

In Israel, the law forbids anyone less than 18 years of age from the sale of alcohol at all stores and venues, however each establishment may at their discretion have a higher minimum age.

It is therefore recommended that you always carry your ID card when you go out. Bars in Israel generally stay open until dawn or into the morning hours so alcohol is available at any time.
