Internship Opportunities in Palestine: If you listen to the news, you might think of Palestine as just a war-torn area that isn’t safe for international travellers. That couldn’t be further from the truth! While Palestine’s people are facing a difficult time, the area is still a great destination for those interested in an internship program. With incredibly friendly and welcoming people, a rich history and culture, and great food, Palestine should be on your internship destination list!

Internships are a great way to gain real hands-on experience in an area of work you are interested in pursuing. Usually spanning from a few weeks anywhere to up to six months, internships enable you to gain the kind of experience you just can’t get from the page while studying. Combine this with working in a community that can benefit from interns’ work, and you’ve got some powerful social impact.

Interning overseas has a host of fantastic benefits, including the opportunity for cultural exchange, learning a second or additional language, and creating long-term professional networks. Interning in Palestine specifically can create an equally beneficial experience for local communities, creating a strong social impact.

Whatever stage you’re at in your professional career, Engage in Palestine has an internship program to suit your needs.

Types of Internships Available

With such a wide array of needs in the community, there are internships to suit people from almost any background or interest. Below are some of the programs that you might see available at different internship organizations in Palestine:

Education & Teaching

An internship in education in Palestine has an incredibly wide-reaching impact. English skills are important for Palestinians, not only for their future employment opportunities but also to help speak to the world about what happens in Palestine. Other support, like tutoring or skills-based education initiatives, can really help children and youth to work towards a brighter future. In this program, interns might teach English or other languages to students of various ages, assist at local schools or community centers, develop lesson plans, and engage in cultural exchange through education.

Human Rights & Advocacy

One of our most popular internship programs, learn about Human Rights in the context of Palestine through regular interactions with individuals and organisations who are working every day towards a better human rights outcome for the occupied territories. You’ll engage in activities like spending time with local human rights organisations, conducting research on social justice, refugee rights, and legal issues, and assisting in grassroots advocacy efforts. Perhaps most valuable of all, you’ll be able to witness first-hand the reality of human rights issues in the West Bank.

Journalism & Media

Media and advocacy are some of the most important ways to spread the word about Palestine. Through our Media and Journalism program, participants can meet with inspiring local journalists, and learn more about how they can use their skills to tell people about their experiences when they return home. In this program, you will do things like writing articles or reports on political, social and cultural topics, engage in photojournalism, or contributing to local or international media outlets covering Palestine.

Business & Entrepreneurship

Support young Palestinians in their professional aspirations. With a difficult job market and high unemployment, Palestinian youth need all the support they can get to gain employment or start their own business. Mentorship and guidance in professionalism or entrepreneurship is a great way to help support the next generation of leaders in Palestine. In this program, you will meet with local social enterprises working for the benefit of women’s rights, support start-ups and small businesses in Palestine, and learn about the economic landscape and challenges in Palestine.

Cultural & Community Development

Art, music, and creativity are proven to help people express and deal with trauma, allowing people to tell their stories in their own way and to process and heal from their experience of living under occupation. Any creative workshops to support children and youth to express themselves are very welcome. Interns in this program will do things like participate in arts, music, and heritage preservation initiatives, organise community events and cultural exchange programs, and assist in local social impact projects.

Medical & Health Internships (for those with relevant experience and qualifications)

Medical support is not readily available in some parts of the West Bank. Volunteers with a background in medical care can work with local organisations to help provide additional support to people in need. Interns in this program might do things like assist healthcare professionals in clinics and hospitals, engage in public health research and awareness programs, or observe and contribute to healthcare initiatives.

Key Benefits of an Internship in Palestine

There is a wide range of benefits to doing an internship in Palestine, and some of the most important ones might not immediately come to mind.

First, you will gain some really valuable professional experience in your internship program. This will include ‘hard’ skills and experience, like hands-on work related to your area of interest, but it also includes useful and transferable skills like operating in a cross-cultural environment and developing speaking skills in Arabic.

Full cultural immersion in another country is a real benefit. You can learn firsthand about the history, cultural practices, religion, food, and celebrations of this unique and beautiful place. Based out of Hebron city in the southern West Bank, you will get to be fully immersed in day-to-day Palestinian life, which is a great opportunity for learning and cultural exchange.

Another significant benefit of interning in Palestine is the opportunity to grow your professional network for future career development. During your time here, you will meet some exceptional people working hard for the Palestinian cause – whether they be local or international.

Most interns speak about their time in Palestine as being incredibly personally enriching. You will get to make a great difference to the community through your work, but you will invariably gain a lot from your experience, too. Living in Palestine teaches adaptability, resilience, and the ability to communicate across cultural divides.

Challenges & Considerations

Visa & Travel Information

Once you have been accepted into your chosen program, it’s time to start planning your trip to Palestine! The first thing to know is that there is no separate visa to enter Palestine – you will need to get a tourist visa from Israel on arrival. We have some tips on how to travel from Jordan to Palestine that can help you with the process. As of January 1st, 2025, anyone traveling to Palestine needs to fill out an Electronic Travel Authorization form prior to departure.

Accommodation

We offer three types of housing options to suit everyone. Our safe and comfortable shared apartments are perfect for those who want to spend more time around their fellow volunteers. Participants can also choose to stay with a host family, enabling full immersion into local life. Finally, we can organise private accommodation for people who will stay longer in Palestine or who simply prefer more privacy. All our accommodation options are close to the Center to enable ease of access.

Budget & Cost of Living

The next big thing to think about is budgeting for your study. Things to consider are tuition fees, accommodation, travel costs, and daily expenses. At some schools, like Engage in Palestine, tuition fees are inclusive of accommodation and breakfast. Choosing a program like this can significantly reduce your costs. The currency in Palestine is the New Israeli Shekel. You can check a currency converter tool to see the rate and check websites like Numbeo to get a sense of the current cost of living for everyday expenses.

Safety & Local Etiquette

Contrary to what you might hear in the news, life for internationals in Palestine is incredibly safe. Getting into the country can be a little bit difficult at times, as Israeli border security can be very strict depending on the security situation. Our best advice is not to mention Palestine or the West Bank or learning Arabic and instead talk about doing tourism in Israel. Once you are across the border, it’s really easy to travel to your destination.

Hebron is quite a conservative city, so make sure you are respectful to the locals and dress accordingly. This means long, loose clothing for women and men whenever you are in public or with guests and making sure not to have physical contact with the opposite sex.

How to Apply for an Internship in Palestine

Research Programs & Organizations

Because there are many internship organisations, selecting the right one is an important decision. It can be difficult to tell the reality of an experience from what you see online. So, how do you pick a good organisation?

The first tip is to choose a locally-run organisation. This ensures that your work is needed by and integrated with the local community. While done with the best of intentions, some overseas internship organisations can actually have a negative impact on the local community. Check online or by communicating with the organization directly to see whether the programs are locally run.

Our second piece of advice is to not only check the organisation’s website, but also whether they have an online presence elsewhere where you can verify the experiences of other volunteers. Engage in Palestine is registered with Go Overseas, a well-known organisation that helps people from around the world to find meaningful and fulfilling volunteer positions. We currently have a 4.85 (out of 5) rating from 852 reviews and have received over 20 community awards from 2019 onwards, including for 2024.

Application Process

Check the application requirements for your chosen program. Some may require a CV, a motivation letter – even an interview. It’s best to check the guidelines and be prepared to participate in the process.

It’s really simple and easy to apply to volunteer with Engage in Palestine. Simply check our programs for the one you are most interested in, and email us at info@ecpalestine.org with the dates you would like to attend. You will be forwarded a short application form to fill out and return before you are accepted into the program.

Program Costs & Financial Considerations: Internship fees, funding opportunities, and scholarships.

Something to consider when planning to volunteer in Palestine is covering costs. One of these costs will be the fees for your volunteer program. Make sure to check what your organization of choice covers within their program fees. At Engage in Palestine, your fees cover:

  • Secure, modern, and fully-equipped accommodation close to the Center and Hebron’s main Ein Sara street for the duration of your stay.
  • Three hours of Arabic class per week to help you speak with local people and get around in Palestine (unless you are studying Arabic as your main program with us).
  • Breakfast five days a week, consisting of all the things you might find on a Palestinian breakfast table: bread, hommus, shakshuka, olive oil and za’atar, avocado, labna, and more! All served with tea and coffee, of course.
  • All of your program activities, including visits to local organizations, activists, journalists, refugee camps, and more.

You can find the price list for our programs here.

Outside of the program fee, other potential costs include mobile data for your roaming, e-sim, or local sim card, eating dinner at restaurants along Ein Sara street with other volunteers, or travelling to other cities in the West Bank like Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Jericho or Ramallah. What you spend during your time here really depends on your lifestyle and how many souvenirs you can fit into your suitcase!

Bank account looking a little on the empty side? Fundraising is one way to help cover the costs of your chosen program. Crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe offer a platform for your friends and family to get involved in supporting your volunteer experience. Sharing your motivations for coming to Palestine, along with a link for people to donate, is an easy way to get support.

Other fundraising ideas could include setting up a bake sale, doing a running challenge and asking people to sponsor you, or organising a clothes-swap event at your local community center.

Testimonials from Past Interns (3-5 people)

  • Personal stories from individuals who have interned in Palestine.
  • Their experiences, insights, and professional or personal growth.
  • Advice for future interns on how to make the most of their time.

Kayleigh, 29, United States – Human Rights Internship Program

“During my stay, I was able to visit essential sites to understand the complexity of the violence of apartheid. These visits included H2, Masafer Yatta, Al Fawwar Refugee camp, the office of Human Rights Defenders, a school for blind children, an Islamic orphanage for boys, a community kitchen run by women, the keffiyeh factory, a glass factory, and studios of various local artists.

I thought I understood the experience in Palestine, but now I realize how little I knew before coming here. It’s very valuable for any activist to come here to see it with your own eyes. There are so many stories that aren’t exposed through the media.”

Adam, 23, United States – Human Rights Program

“The human rights program was not only very fulfilling but gave me a lot more insight into the human rights situation in Palestine that cannot be directly observed from a foreigner’s lens. The administration is highly knowledgeable about the political and social landscape of Palestine and were more than willing to share their knowledge with the volunteers.”
