MSA is therefore one of the most reliable ways to communicate with Arabic speakers across the Middle East and North Africa, as well as with the wider Arab diaspora.

Regardless of dialect, the vast majority of Arabic speakers will be able to recognize Modern Standard Arabic as it has become the standardized form of contemporary written Arabic. Additionally, many Arabic dialects share much of their lexicon with MSA, similar to classical Latin’s relationship to contemporary romance languages. Students who study Modern Standard Arabic are thus better prepared to interact with and understand the multitude of Arabic dialects from North Africa to the Gulf.

The curriculum employed on this course is based on a book known as “الطريق الى العربية   – Modern Standard Arabic”. This book covers all aspects of the use of standard written and spoken Arabic at all levels, and is specially designed to take into account the needs of English-speaking learners. Among the many features of the book are the following:

–  a step-by-step guide to understanding written and spoken texts in Arabic.

–  an emphasis on developing speaking, reading, writing and listening skills.

–  use of a large and diverse vocabulary of words and phrases commonly used in the Arabic language.

–  a spread of subject matter which covers topics related to both the Middle East and North Africa.

–  units relating to Arab folklore, customs and proverbs, as well as short articles on various topics related to the Arab world.

–  a variety of exercises and quizzes which are designed to enhance grammar, vocabulary and communication strategies.

What Levels Of Modern Standard Arabic Are Available?

Study Modern Standard Arabic Online courses are available at all levels, from the Starter Level right through to the Advanced Level:

• Starter’s Course: This course is designed for those who do not have any background knowledge of the Arabic language. Participants are introduced to the common phoneme groups, by which the letters are divided into several units. They will also learn to link letters with short and long diacritics so that the letters can then be read with various diacritics. Conversational phrases will of course also be employed.

• Beginner’s Course: This course aims to address aspects which have not been addressed in the first level. At this level, a systematic and simplified focus is placed on basic tools of expression such as signal names, adjectives and directions, while clarifying the differences between them. In addition, appropriate and expressive illustrations will be used during each lesson in order to link the image to the word. At this level  the student will be instructed on how to ask different questions and on how to answer them, whether in the negative or in the affirmative. 

• Intermediate Course: At this level, the range of grammatical terms used will be gradually increased to include more nouns, verbs, prepositions and so on, as well as exploring the structure of actual sentences. This course will also supply students with a diverse set of topics which will equip them with an increasing number of words, structures and methods which they can then employ in conversation about various aspects of life. In addition, students will learn some important spelling rules and will get to see a variety of Arabic calligraphy.

• Advanced Course: This level will present grammatical rules within the context of a range of interesting dialogues, thus helping the student understand these rules. In addition it will introduce the student to aspects of Islamic and Arab civilization. Each text and dialogue will be followed by a series of exercises designed to enhance and consolidate the student’s understanding of grammatical rules.

Do I Need To Take An Arabic Placement Test? 

If you are having difficulty deciding on which course to enroll in, we offer a free placement test to evaluate all of our students’ Arabic language skills in four crucial areas: speaking, reading, writing and listening. We will of course be very happy to consult with you if you have any questions regarding course levels.

The Placement Tests will only be taken by students who already have Arabic language skills, or who have studied the language previously. Those who have no prior knowledge of the Arabic language will be placed automatically on our Starter course. Whether taking a placement test or not, it is worth noting that all of our courses focus on the four language skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening.

Who teaches the Modern Standard Arabic Online Courses? 

The Study Modern Standard Arabic Online course is taught by teachers who hold  bachelor’s degrees in either Arabic or English Studies.

• Beginner Students are placed with teachers who speak good English in order to facilitate the learning process.

• More advanced students and those with a reasonably good understanding of Arabic are also placed with teachers who speak English, although the primary language of communication between student and teacher will be Arabic in order to further develop the student’s abilities.
